IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES: 

Personal Communication Device Policy 

Students may use personal communication devices (PCDs), i.e., cell phones, smart watches, etc., before and after school at the elementary and middle school levels, as decided by the principal.  PCDs are to be off, or on silent, and in student lockers from 8:19 - 3:37.  PCDs can also be used during after-school activities or school-related functions, unless otherwise restricted.

Dress Code 

The fundamental purposes of the Oshkosh Area School District are to maintain and enhance the learning atmosphere of our schools, be consistent with our district goals, and provide a safe learning environment for our students. The responsibility for the personal appearance of students enrolled in the Oshkosh Area School District shall normally rest with the students themselves and their guardians.

 

To further promote inclusivity and respect for diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, as well as individual gender expressions, the school district encourages students and staff to wear culturally expressive, religious clothing, traditional regalia, and attire that captures their unique gender identities. Student dress or grooming should NOT adversely affect the health or safety of students, nor disrupt the learning process within the classroom or school.

 

Values:

  • All students should feel empowered to dress comfortably for school and fully participate in the educational environment without experiencing fear of or actual unnecessary discipline or body shaming.
  • All students and staff should recognize that they are accountable for managing their own personal "distractions" without imposing regulations on individual students' clothing or self-expression.
  • Student dress code enforcement should not result in unnecessary barriers to school attendance.
  • Teachers should focus on teaching without the additional and often uncomfortable burden of dress code enforcement.

 

Students MUST wear:

  • Shirt (with fabric in the front, back, and on the sides under the arms)
  • Bottom: pants/sweatpants/shorts/skirt/dress/leggings
  • Shoes; activity-specific shoe requirements are permitted (for example sports, cooking, tech ed, etc.)

 

*Clothes must be worn in a way such that genitals, buttocks, breasts, and nipples are fully covered with opaque fabric.

 

Courses that include attire as part of the curriculum may include assignment or activity-specific guidelines. For example, physical education, cooking, business, public speaking, job readiness, etc.  

 

Students may NOT wear:

  • Violent language or images.
  • Hate speech, profanity, or sexual references.
  • Images, language, or brands depicting drugs, alcohol, tobacco (or any illegal item or activity).  
  • Clothing identified with a gang or gang-related activities.
  • Images or language that creates a hostile or intimidating environment based on any protected class.
  • No strapless shirts or dresses.
  • Visible underwear. 
  • Bathing suits.
  • Sunglasses
  • Blankets or similar coverings.

 

If there is a disagreement between students and/or guardians and the staff regarding appropriateness of clothing, administration will use their discretion to make the decision.
